[COLUMN] Turn Off Taxpayer Spigot For Planned Parenthood

Abortion

What would you say if I told you there is an organization funded by the government that was responsible for 333,964 deaths in 2011?

‘Tis true.

According to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s 2011-12 annual report released Jan. 7 (http://j.mp/USqMYT), that is the number of babies the agency killed in 2011, a record high. From 2009 to 2011, just a three-year span, Planned Parenthood abortionists killed almost 1 million babies (995,687). That is 1 million lives intentionally killed in a mere 36 months by one organization.

That, my friends, is not a “choice”; that is a massacre, a holocaust of those in our society least able to defend themselves. Worse yet, it happens at the request of the one person in the world we expect to protect the baby, the mother.

I mention this not to rail against abortion. After all, every thinking person knows it is wrong, even when they claim to be pro-abortion rights. How many times have we heard a pro-abortion rights liberal say they support the mother’s right to kill her baby but that they themselves find it wrong or believe we should try to reduce the number of abortions?

Come on, folks, either abortion is right or it is wrong. There is no gray area.

And while on the subject, before I get to the real topic at hand, if you think abortion is wrong because it is murder, how can you rationalize making it legal in cases of rape or incest? That is completely inconsistent. How a person is conceived makes no difference.

But, alas, until the courts overturn Roe v. Wade or the Congress passes a law declaring life begins at conception, abortion is legal.

Still, that does not mean I should have to pay to operate Planned Parenthood and its abortuaries.

The U.S. government is borrowing more than $1 trillion a year. It is the height of irresponsibility to take money from taxpayers and give it to a private organization — any private organization, but especially one that is systematically killing people — when we, as a nation, can’t even pay our own bills.

It is especially disturbing given the fact that Planned Parenthood can operate without the government largess.

In its 2012 report, the organization reported that it received $542 million in taxpayer funding during fiscal year 2011 to 2012. That amounts to 45 percent of its revenue.

More importantly, though, the agency reported it had $87.4 million in excess revenue and $1.2 billion in net assets. Those numbers do not show an organization in dire need of government support.

Now, I already know the liberal response, so let me deftly shut that down right here.

The first argument will be that the federal government doesn’t fund abortions.

Of course it does. Money is fungible. Every dime given to Planned Parenthood frees up money for more baby killing. For example, if I were to give you $100 and tell you not to spend it on alcohol, you will spend it on bills. And that $100 you were going to spend on bills, you can use to buy alcohol.

The second argument your typical liberal likes to put forth is that Planned Parenthood does more than abortions.

Perhaps, but while abortions reached a record high at the agency in 2011, cancer screening and prevention services and contraceptive services continued to drop. In fact, contraceptive services have dropped by 12 percent since 2009 and cancer screening and prevention services have dropped by 29 percent in that same period. Clearly, the agency is ramping up its killing machine and ramping down its other health services.

As to prove that point, abortions made up 92 percent of Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy services while prenatal care and adoption referrals accounted for only 7 percent and 0.6 percent respectively. For every adoption referral, Planned Parenthood killed 145 babies.

That is not enough for the organization’s leaders. This year, they are mandating that all affiliates perform abortions, which means 2013 will be the bloodiest yet.

It’s time the government stopped using our precious tax dollars to fund private groups, especially one boasting such gruesome numbers as Planned Parenthood.
